Cardinal O'Brien admits sexual misconduct and apologises

Cardinal Keith O'Brien has admitted sexual conduct which fell below standards
that could be expected from him. He has apologised.

Statement from Cardinal O'Brien

"In recent days certain allegations which have been made against me have become public. Initially, their anonymous and non-specific nature led me to contest them.

However, I wish to take this opportunity to admit that there have been times that my sexual conduct has fallen below the standards expected of me as a priest, archbishop and cardinal.

To those I have offended, I apologise and ask forgiveness.

To the Catholic Church and people of Scotland, I also apologise.

I will now spend the rest of my life in retirement. I will play no further part in the public life of the Catholic Church in Scotland."

I still wonder why the matter was revealed now and not years earlier. I  hope that will be investigated in due course.

I am reminded of what St. Francis de Sales* said:  "It is not hypocrisy to speak better than we act. If it were, good Lord, we would all have to remain silent"

* It may have been St. John Chrysostom   ( I cannot lay hand on the relevent book at the moment

  1. I like the quotation, Father.
What has been particularly bizarre has been the way in which media commentators have referred to Cardinal O'Brien's pro-life and pro-family statements as if they were merely his own personal opinions when he was simply articulating authentic Christian teaching- as a bishop should.

  2. Since there have been so many cases now of bishops behaving badly - either recently or in the past, either by their own conduct or by covering up the conduct of others I wonder how many, like me, are beginning to ask about the process of choosing bishops. I have long thought that the process in England and Wales leaves a lot to be desired.

    1. Father,
You are not alone in holding that view, though in fairness there have not been many in E & W who are KNOWN to have covered up.

  3. Whoever said it, Father, it's a wonderful quotation!
