Conclave will begin on Tuesday next... and then?

Vatican City, 8 March 2013 (VIS) – The eighth General Congregation of the College of Cardinals has decided that the Conclave will begin on Tuesday, 12 March 2013. A “pro eligendo Romano Pontifice” Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica that morning. In the afternoon, the cardinals will enter into the Conclave.

Comment:  In common with most Catholics I will loyally accept whoever is elected.
My personal hope would be for Cardinal Dias who some years ago told me he was not holy enough for the office of pope. I reminded him that, historically, lack of holiness was never a  bar to being Pope. He laughed and said "look at my name...Ivan the Terrible".  I had no reply I could make!
I think he is very holy, and has been Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples.

  1. How long does the conclave usually sit before habemus papam?

    1. Until the cardinals elect someone with appropriate majority! I understand two votes can be taken daily. In modern times, or at least in more recent times, the conclaves have lasted a few days, though I think in latter half of 20th century some lasted weeks!
Some are stressing that we need a Pope for Holy Week. We do not.
I do not mind if the conclave continues until next Christmas, provided it produces the right man. I remember rushing home from school in the evening to listen to the radio to hear if smoke was white or black! One evening there was great doubt as to which!

  2. Is he the Argentinian one? I agree with you. The "perfect" candidate.
